My name is Al Carter, and I am a doctoral candidate in the School of Justice Studies at the University of New Orleans. I am conducting this research as part of my doctoral dissertation.
This study is being conducted as doctoral research at the University of New Orleans. The study has been reviewed and approved by the University of New Orleans Institutional Review Board (IRB).
My research focuses on the experiences of families and caregivers whose children have been impacted by the juvenile justice system. I am especially interested in understanding the barriers they face, the strengths they bring, and the supports that can help families thrive. This study centers on family voice, equity, and the importance of family-centered approaches.
I am deeply committed to uplifting the voices of families who are often overlooked in conversations about the juvenile justice system. Families have invaluable knowledge about what works, what does not work, and what real support looks like. This study is about listening with respect and using those experiences to help create meaningful change.
Families are the experts of their own experiences. My role as a researcher is to listen with humility, treat every story with care, and advocate for systems and communities that value and support families. I believe in the power of family voice to drive meaningful change in policy, practice, and culture.
